About Derek

Truckin’, up to Buffalo. Been thinkin’, you got to mellow slow. Takes time, you pick a place to go, and just keep truckin’ on.

As I sat in the parking lot of MarJon School of Beauty Culture, I continued to hum along and wondered, “Why am I here and where will this all take me?” I didn’t have the answers on that bitter Buffalo, New York morning, but the Grateful Dead insisted to keep Truckin’, and so I did.

From Toronto and New York to Sarasota, Derek chased after his dreams; being inspired by the respectable and renowned Anthony (Toni) and Geatano (Guy). They set the standards for his professional career, but it wasn’t until the realization of a look that continues to drive his passion to this day.

It’s that quick, undeniable look a woman gives when she feels pretty. As self serving as it may sound, Derek can’t help but smile knowing he had some small part in achieving that feeling. He may be helping women get all the feels, but there’s one woman who he attributes making his dreams a reality: Alexandra, his wife, mother of their two children, business partner, and the brains behind it all.

“Without Alexandra my dreams would have remained dreams. She makes everything come to life.”

About Our Tribe

After decades of chasing dreams, Derek decided to build his brand and tribe. In July 2015, the doors of Derek the Salon opened in the Burns Square Historic District at 610 South Pineapple Avenue. A hair salon right in downtown Sarasota. His tribe is well rounded and seasoned with 90% of team members having 15+ years of experience and niche specialities include hair extensions, smoothing treatments, color, balayage, and hair cutting.

“Clients do not come first, employees come first. If you take care of your employees they will take care of your clients.” -Richard Branson

The Salon

Due to Derek’s enthusiasm, strong work ethic and values he attracts like minded people and demands kindness and energy in all new hires. Derek continues to foster education by collaborating with local and national industry pushers. Both of his salons will be listed Green Circle Salons, because effort is attractive not only for hair, but for each other and the environment.
